Hello and welcome,

Blackmagic Design are surging forward with the development of their cameras. Just announced is the 1.8 update, for all the cameras in the Blackmagic range.

The most noteable feature, the one that I’ve been waiting for, is that RAW recording has now been enabled on the 4K Production Camera. This is huge news. Plus there is a change to the code base, which brings a new interface, audio enhancements and compressed Cinema DNG recording. There is plenty to get excited about. Beyond this the beta for Resolve 11 is now available for download. It seems Christmas has all come at once.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, has posted a video on the Blackmagic Design website, outlining the new features and changes which the 1.8 update brings:

Having tested the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K earlier this year I was mighty impressed with the results, however, I knew that the jewel in the crown, the RAW recording, was still to come. I’ll be very keen to test out the RAW capability on the 4K camera. More on this very soon.

Check out my report:

AFFORDABLE 4K: SHOOTING WITH THE BM PRODUCTION CAMERA

This was recorded well before the RAW update was available. All images filmed with the 4K camera were recorded using ProRes.

New Thrilling Dramatic Film, The Living, Uses Blackmagic Cinema Camera and DaVinci Resolve

"The Blackmagic Cinema Camera gave us all we needed in terms of image quality and dynamic range, and its small size was also perfect and let us get all the shots that we needed throughout the film. The form factor really allowed us to shrink the entire rig and use smaller and lighter tools, but the image quality coming from it was the same as I would get from a big camera," said Aleksandar. "We got the film done faster and on budget with this camera."

Keeping the clients happy

Keeping the clients happy

I was talking with a colleague about spending money on expensive cameras, and the question was asked: "will the client see it?" To my way of thinking it is not about whether "the client will see it." It is about keeping the client happy.

Our job is to provide the best results possible with the equipment we have. Sometimes that can mean improving the quality with an external recorder or shooting multicamera. Go to the effort of lighting a scene rather than working with available light, this is what it is about. The camera is only one part of the equation.

So rather than getting obsessed with the camera technology get obessed with the whole process.

The definition of quality is a subjective things - however we all know it when we see it.
