Hello and welcome,
I missed NAB this year due to filming a job in Australia - from a distance I paid close attention to all the news as it filtered through online. I’m particularly excited about the new camera announcements from Blackmagic with Ursa and the new Studio cameras. The HD Studio cameras are out already. The 4K Studio Cameras and Ursa are still to come. Then there was the surprise announcement of AJA Cion, a 4K, UHD, HD camcorder with APS-C sized CMOS sensor and global shutter. The Cion will record ProRes 4:4:4 or the different flavours of ProRes 4:2:2 internal or RAW to external recorder.
Atomos made the blistering announcement of the Shogun - a portable 4K RAW or ProRes recorder with 1920 x 1080 screen, and Atomos also announced the Ninja Star - which is a low-cost portable HDMI ProRes recorder. Plug the Samurai Shogun into the new Sony A7S or Panasonic GH4, and you have the means to record stunning 4K. Beyond all this, a technology preview by JVC of 4 different 4K cameras was shown. JVC indicated 4K cameras are to ship this year. These are all major announcements worth knowing about. A huge thanks to Dean Cleary for filming the reports for Movie Machine at NAB!

AFFORDABLE 4K: SHOOTING WITH THE BLACKMAGIC PRODUCTION CAMERA
I tested the Blackmagic Production camera for over a week and found this to be immensely capable. The images are sharp, the colour rendition is good though does require grading - I was shooting the flat film setting. At this stage the camera records ProRes (HQ). RAW is yet to be enabled.
The small form of the Production Camera makes this useful for the single person who needs to move quick and acquire high quality images. The benefit of recording the higher resolution of 4K are very quickly apparent for those currently producing HD – when working with the 4K footage within an HD Timeline one can pan and scan across the Ultra HD image, and zoom within the frame.
This makes this camera ideal for the person looking to capture 4K with a small, portable, easy to use camera!
