Hello and welcome,
Location Hertfordshire, England, November, 1975. 40 years ago, the rock band Queen recorded the video for Bohemian Rhapsody, at Elstree Studios, in just under 4 hours.
Editor Barry Stevens then spent 5 hours working at the Trilion Studios in Soho, alongside director, Bruce Gowers, to create what is undoubtedly the most influential music video of the 20th century. Running 2 inch Quad tape machines in sync, through a vision mixer, Barry worked with tools primitive compared to todays technology, and produced magnificent results in a very short amount of time.
In the words of Barry Stevens: "We had to get a move on 'cause they were waiting to send it to Top of the Pops."
This piece documents what went on in the editing room and provides insight into that moment in video history, when one music video promo changed filmmaking forever.

Walter Murch 2015
Walter Murch is a hero of mine. Just take one look at his film credits and you can see he is a walking encyclopedia of cinema history, having worked on amazing movies including two of the Godfather films, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, American Graffiti, Ghost, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain and many other movies which have defined cinema in the 20th and 21st centuries.
I first interviewed Walter in 2008 in Las Vegas. He was working with Final Cut Pro (classic) at the time, and had edited Cold Mountain using this system. Walter was enthusiastic about Final Cut Pro and the future of this editing platform.
The next time I interviewed Walter was in 2011, after Apple shocked the world by ending the life of the original Final Cut Pro and launching Final Cut Pro X. This was a time of turbulence in the editing community, with the reverberations of what happened then still being felt today.
It is with this topic that I began the 2015 interview with Walter - Walter explains the current state of play in terms of technology for professional editors, and provides his perspective on what works for him, and his latest experience working with Adobe Premiere Pro.
Over to Walter to explain where he has gone on his editing journey:
