Flying drones!

Drones is an area I've stayed clear of until now. I'm scared of ending my career prematurely or doing something stupid and making myself uninsurable. That's how I felt until recently!

On a shoot and a colleague reveals they have brought a drone. I know the rules. You're allowed to use drones for pleasure without a licence, though to use drones professionally in the UK requires you to have done a course and become qualified (becoming qualified costs a substantial amount of money!)

We are doing this for fun. And what fun it is is. The drone is several hundred feet above us, I'm watching the images being fed to an iPhone while my colleague flies the quadcopter.

I suggest a tracking shot along a road, with trees lining either side. All is good until the drone smashes into a tree and then plummets to the ground...

We retrieve the device which has minimal damage. A few replacement parts will sort out the rig.

I transfer the media to hard drive and playback the results. I'm totally taken with the footage! This is something I have to have for the filmmaking I do!!!

I'm now researching drones, investigating course options, insurance, and everything I need to know to use drones professionally. My goal isn't to become a full-blown drone operator, however, the ability to grab ariels, when safe and suitable, will revolutionise my filmmaking. More on this soon.
